Voxnotic (2019-Present)

Voxnotic focuses on offering full life cycle software development consulting and contracting services, specializing in medical visualization, 3D visualization, and AR/VR. With nearly 30 years of visualization software development and 20+ years of medical visualization experience, Voxnotic can provide the unique capabilities that many companies do not have on staff.

Medtronic CardioInsight (2016-2019)

At Medtronic CardioInsight, we developed a non-invasive cardiac mapping system. I joined not long after Medtronic had acquired CardioInsight. As the software architect, I was responsible for the roadmap and strategic direction of the software architecture for the non-invasive cardiac mapping system, including next versions and long range capability planning. Driving factors include value based healthcare (VBHC), patient care continuum, improved deployment models, and new markets/business models.

I developed next generation technologies and plans for augmented reality, surface tracking (SLAM, SfM, Magnetic), machine vision, cloud architectures, and healthcare analytics.

ViewRay (2013-2016)

At ViewRay, we developed the world's first MRI guided radiation therapy system. We used MR imaging during the treatment to track tumor movement, and enable/disable the beams based upon whether the tumor is in the beam path. I joined ViewRay before first patient treatment, spending the first year completing and refining the Treatment Planning and Delivery system software. First patient treatment was January 2014. Following which, we worked to improve the software, taking advantage of the new clinical opportunities provided by having MR images as a part of the delivery workflow.

I was the manager of the Treatment Planning and Delivery software team, responsible for software release planning and development. The team was responsible for the planning/delivery application software, database, DICOM import/export, MRI integration, and real-time tumor tracking.

We were a small company when I joined (~40 employees) but grew to be more than 100 employees.

Philips Healthcare (1997-2013)
(formerly Marconi Medical System, formerly Picker International)

Philips Healthcare develops and sells medical imaging equipment (CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine.) The company previously was Marconi Medical Systems, previously Picker International.

I joined Picker to develop 3D Visualization/Volume Rendering for one of its CT scanners. Due to the fact that the scanner is a currently shipping product, I can not say much about the product and its development. Without releasing proprietary information, I can say that the resulting rendering system is one of the most flexible and scalable systems I have ever seen or worked on.

After completing the CT scanner project, I went on to be a founding member of the company's common application platform initiative, where common application technologies (like visualization) would only be developed once and shared amongst all the business units. With the Philips acquisition of the company, this effort was cut short (but would cross my path again.)

After the acquisition, I rejoined CT to improve the surface and volume rendering quality of the CT visualization workstation. After successfully improving the image quality, I was asked to lead a High Performance Volume Rendering project, which resulted in developing a multi-pipe GPU volume rendering product (Non-SLI). Due to this work, I was recruited to join Philips' common platform group, and to productize the renderer for use across the company, which lead to my last role in the company: Project and Software Architect for the Multi-Modality Viewing (MMV) application and the Application Development Environment (ADE) on the IntelliSpace Portal 6 client/server project. The ADE delivers application frameworks, visualization, segmentation, and interaction components of the Philips Common Platform to modality clinical application development teams. The MMV application is a flexible viewing application for MR, CT, NM, and Ultrasound data.

As the Rendering competency team architect, I was also responsible for the architecture and implementation of 3D visualization, registration, and segmentation frameworks of the current and next generation common platforms. This included enhancing the 3D visualization offering from the company products, improving image quality, and applying new 3D visualization technologies to develop new products. I was responsible for core decisions that affected the company 3D visualization technology directions.

Without compromising projects, keywords include: client/server rendering, distributed rendering, volume rendering, GPU, GPGPU, texture mapping, HLSL & GLSL programming, raycasting, OpenGL, & DirectX.

I left Philips when they decided to close my office in Ohio.

Lightscape Technologies (1995-97)

Lightscape Technologies was the first company to develop a commercial implementation of radiosity for photo-realistic lighting and visualization. The technology allowed generating scenes of a photo-realistic nature that could be manipulated interactively, including real-time walk throughs.

I joined Lightscaped Technologies as the 13th employee. (We were small enough that we were located across the hall from a psychiatrist!) I was one of the two person team formed to develop a Windows NT version of the existing SGI application. I ported all the rendering (IrisGL) and radiosity libraries to NT using OpenGL then developed portions of the new Windows based application and its architecture.

On subsequent releases, I was responsible for the cross platform OpenGL/IrisGL display systems, adding new features, improving performance, and designing the next-generation display system. In addition, I was given the role of Project Lead of the Performance Team. The team's goal was to improve the product performance by at least 3 fold. The team achieved this goal and surpassed it. (Some performance improvements were 11x.)

To round out my career with Lightscape, I took on the role of Marketing Manager of Internet Applications and Hardware Vendor Relations. The first portion of the job was to find ways to address the Internet/Web content development with our application. Resulting projects included integrated VRML and panoramic image exporters. The second portion of the job was managing relationships with hardware vendors, mostly the 3D graphics board vendors. Compatibility testing, driver debugging, trade show support, and bundling deals.

My last projects with Lightscape were: Project Manager and developer of the Network Rendering project, and the Microstation file exporter.

Lightscape peaked at around 50 people and then declined as business models and pricing changed. The company ceased to exist around December 7th of 1997. It was bought out by Discreet Logic. Unfortunately, the technology never fully got a chance to be proven in the market place. (Though since AutoDesk has since bought Discreet Logic and therefore owns Lightscape, it may make it yet.) I left to join Marconi/Picker just as Lightscape ended. We had proven that a high powered SGI graphics application could be ported to NT, and that it soon out sold the SGI version by so much that all future SGI development was stopped.
